I can hardly believe that tomorrow marks my first year anniversary of moving to New York City! It seems like yesterday that I packed up my life (and about 10 pounds of jewelry) into two giant suitcases and temporarily settled into a sublet apartment that I found off Craigslist. I moved here with no job and only two people that I could really call friends. Some called it brave — in retrospect, I call it crazy!
Flash forward a year. The boyfriend and the pup have joined me in the city and we’ve nestled into a cozy one bedroom apartment on the east side. I’ve met some amazing people that I’m lucky enough to call friends, including my NYC BFF.
I’ve been able to travel up and down the east coast, but what I love the most is exploring the different neighborhoods right here in the city because wandering down each block is like its own adventure.
And then there’s the food. There’s just so much of it. Food festivals every weekend and cuisines of every culture — it’s out of control. The boyfriend and I have become dessert connoisseurs of sorts and have made it our mission to try every ice cream, cupcake and pastry on this island — and yes, that includes the original cronut!
I’m not going to pretend that every day in this city is easy. There are days when I miss my family and friends, when I wish I had a car to get around, and when I long for the slower paced lifestyle of the west coast. But this journey is about more than adding a few splashy pages to a scrapbook, it’s about overcoming old fears and saying yes to new opportunities. It’s about being part of a city that sometimes sleeps, but never slows down and never gets old.
I’m so thankful for the wonderful, generous, and patient people who have supported me through this crazy ride. Hold on, because there are many more adventures to come!
I turn 27 years old today and as I teeter on the brink of my late twenties (my friends and I agreed that I’m still in my mid until next year!), I’ve realized that as much as I have already accomplished, there’s still so much left to do and experience. This year, I’ve created a list of goals — both large and small — to accomplish by the time the next birthday rolls around. Hi everyone! I’m SO excited to share the next chapter of my blogging adventures with all of you! In fact, if you follow me on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, you probably already noticed something different a-brewin’ from last night: Jenny in Jacquard is now Skirt The Rules.
The name change has been in the works for quite some time, but it took me a while to conjure up a new moniker that embodies my vision for the blog and my perspective on life and style. Enter: Skirt The Rules — a blog that will celebrate creativity and adventure in style. It’ll be much of the same personal style posts that you know and love, sprinkled with more shopping tips, style inspiration and other miscellaneous musings.
I hope you enjoy the new blog! Just make sure you add it to your bookmarks again or follow the new site on WordPress. And if you’re following along on social media, don’t worry — everything changes over automatically (with the exception of Bloglovin’). Today, I’m heading back to Arizona to watch the boyfriend graduate from his Master’s program. I so incredibly proud of him and I’m even more excited to celebrate with friends and family. As this chapter comes to an end, our adventure in NYC together can finally begin! Congrats, my love!
The boyfriend and I have our first NYC apartment! I’ve been subletting since I moved here and even though it was nice place to set up base for a few months, it definitely lacked a personal touch. So when it came to finding an apartment of our own, we wanted to make sure that it was a place we could call home for the next year or two.
Well I scoured the city, trolled Craigslist, and scoped out a dozen apartments during my search. And just when I started to lose hope, I found this gem: a fourth floor walk-up in Gramercy with new renovations, great living space, and two amazing closets (well … for NYC). From the search, to the application, to the fees and deposits — it’s been an exhausting process. But now that’s behind us, we get to focus on making this apartment and this city our home!
